Dr. Vip Viprakasit
Dr Vip Viprakasit graduated with 1st class honours from the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand in 1994. He received his residency training in paediatrics at Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai Thailand and in paediatric haematology at Mahidol University during the period 1994-1999. He continued his training in molecular medicine at the University of Oxford, UK, where he was awarded a doctorate degree (D. Phil) in 2002 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in molecular haematology at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Molecular Haematology Unit, the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, Oxford, UK, in 2004. Dr V. Viprakasit returned to Mahidol University, in 2004 to join the Division of Paediatric Haematology-Oncology at Siriraj Hospital. He is currently Professor in Pediatrics since 2014 and also Programme Director for thalassaemia research at Siriraj-Thalassaemia Center since 2008.
At present, Dr V. Viprakasit is running a research group focusing on molecular genetics in human diseases, in particular, thalassaemia. He has received grant support for this research from several local and international funding agencies including the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, USA, and the MRC, UK.
Dr V. Viprakasit has published over 250 articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals at both national and international levels including Science, Cell, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, Blood, The Lancet, Human Molecular Genetics and the British Journal of Haematology. He has also given numerous presentations at international meetings and conferences. In 2006 and 2014, Dr V. Viprakasit received the prestigious Thailand Research Fellowship and Senior Research Fellowship respectively from Thailand Research Fund (TRF). He has been the Asia-Pacific Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF)-Medical Collaborator since 2008, and participates in the TIF International Scientific Advisory Committee. Dr V. Viprakasit was one of the founding members of the Asia- Pacific Iron Academy (APIA) and, as Secretary General, organized the first APIA Conference in 2009. Dr V. Viprakasit has been on the Experts Panel of The National Science and Technology Development Agency (NASDA) on stem cell research for BIOTEC, Thailand, and on nanotechnology for NANOTEC, Thailand, since 2009. In 2013, Thalassemia Center, Siriraj Hospital under his supervision has received a prestigious award; “Sultan Bin Khalifa International Thalassaemia Award (SITA)” for the excellent clinical center for thalassaemia care. In addition, he recently authored and edited two recent editions of “A clinical practice guideline for Thalassaemia management, both Transfusion Dependent Thalassaemia (TDT) in 2014 and Non-Transfusion Dependent Thalassaemia (NTDT) in 2013 for Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF).
