Born in the UK, Dr. Jan Traeger-Synodinos completed her Doctorate (DPhil) at the University of Oxford with Professor Sir David Weatherall and Dr. Bill Wood. In 1982 she moved to Greece where in 1983 she took a research position at the First Department of Paediatrics, Athens University, and in 1986 as a clinical scientist in St. Sophia’s Children’s Hospital, Athens, and a research associate of the Department of Medical Genetics, Athens University. In March 2005 she was appointed Assistant Professor of Molecular Genetics in the Department of Medical Genetics of Athens University Medical School, promoted to Associate Professor in January 2013. With respect to clinical services she oversees molecular diagnostics and prenatal diagnosis for haemoglobinopathies and childhood nephropathies and additionally preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) services for monogenic diseases and hereditary chromosome abnormalities. She has co-ordinated and contributed to Best Practice Guidelines for laboratory diagnosis of haemoglobinopathies and PGD. Her research activities focus on investigating the molecular genetics of common monogenic diseases in Greece (haemoglobinopathies, CF, FH etc), and the development of new methods for molecular analysis. She has more than 130 peer-reviewed publications in international journals and 8 chapters in books (plus many Greek language publications). She has been a member of the steering committee of the ESHRE PGD consortium since 2004 and is currently past-Chair.
